If the Mail can investigate and find out such things, why doesn't the Government send out investigators of it's own, to check on what our overseas aid is being spent on?

We should double the aid given to India to make sure it is properly spent.

India still has very many poor people even though even though Wealth at the top is increasing.

Because one aid scheme appears to be poorly run does not make the case for stopping or reducing overseas aid.

Things might change now over the crisis in the EU - while we have austerity measures, all overseas aid should be stopped until we balance our own books.

Did you know that in 200 of the last 250 years, the UK's debt was higher than it is now?
Gromit, I am not interested in the last 250 years we are in debt and debts have to be paid - whatever is paid out in overseas aid could be better spent in this country looking after our own - we are heading very rapidly into a double dip situation.
P>S The point is our contribution to overseas aid is not being spent where it should, so stop it.
AOG I would like to know how you keep a check on how overseas aid is spent, hugh vasts of monies are involved, if they send food the criminal element sells it on the black market, the despots fill their own swiss bank accounts, so I would say stop all aid, lets help ourselves recover from the state we are in.

Are you serious?

If you are, then that must be one of the most ridiculous things you have ever said.

I totally agree with you, all aid should stop until we have enough finances to look after our own.

But when we ourselves recover, then the aid money should be paid direct to charities such as the Red Cross, and then they could arrange for the food etc, to go where it is most needed.
There was a discussion recently on the radio about how unsuccessful the Overseas Aid has become. Plowing money in just keeps more people alive who need to be fed which requires more aid.

A better solution put forward was that used by China. In return for money invested in Africa it keeps the natives in homes and food on their plates. China gets in return mineral resources and adds to its wealth.

Many would call it a win - win situation.

It gets worse,

/// Ministers are in secret talks to enshrine in law the Government’s promise to spend 0.7 per cent of national income on overseas aid. ///

On top of this we also contribute to the EU overseas aid budget. Why can't we just stick to this?
