To mark the death of Gary Speed they are having a minute's applause at all games - doesn't this make far more sense than a minute's silence?

For a footballer....yes.

Yes I heard that last week - the intended silence was interrupted by idiots shouting. The applause was actually far more effective.

I think its a good idea in all cases. I always find a minute's silence uncomfortable, and spoilt if someone doesn't realise and says something out loud, or a sprog grizzles at the wrong time (or in my case a dog barks) although at our friend's cremation recently we were told NOT to take the dogs out if they made a noise as it was her wish they should remain!
yes, recently they have all been applause rather than silence!

much less chance of anyone mucking around! x
I think the first time I was aware of applause at a funeral was at Princess Diana's. Does anyone remember this happening before then?
no Dianne's' was the first time i heard it, good idea too
Diana who? ;
I too am more comfortable with applause than silence. I think that it is a Continental custom.
Princess Diana.
