Laptop keeps stopping

My windows 7 keeps clamming up for about thirty seconds at a time, I just can't do anything. It is driving me mad. Help please ! But easy help please as I'm not technically minded. Thanks all. By the way if you say " have you ... " done this or that please explain how to do it !
