I have been told that a first class letter can take between one and three days, and a second class letter between three and five days !! Has anyone had a first class letter delivered as late as three days later ?? To the same country ??

Hiya mickmak, your response made me laugh, no I don't work for RM, but I think they are wonderful. They get me lots of positive feedback, like: very fast delivery, etc etc etc.
My mail is delivered every three days according to the date on it. 1st class? No.
Picture this if you will. Last week (Wednesday) my daughter ordered a gift for me from a website in Australia, they told her it would probably be 10-14 days before it arrived - it arrived this morning. I rent a storage unit a few miles my home and the invoices regularly arrive a fortnight after the date they were sent, if they even arrive at all. What does that tell us about the state of Royal Mail. Back in the day, a man arrived at work is asked to work late, he sends his wife a postcard informing her he will be late home that evening, that postcard arrives in plenty of time for her to hold off fixing the evening meal unitl he arrives home - this was in the 1900's! Before automation etc - and they call this progress? Sorry, rant over thanks for your patience
Glad you're pleased with RM. Personally I think they're a load of Sh1t. Our posty I believe is dyslexic (sp)we all get each others mail.
micmak, you make me laugh.
Fed up of having to deliver mail to my neighbours. Cannot post people recocognise numbers?
As I've said before in posts on this subject I'm part of the postal survey which involves posting and receiving various types of mail, logging dates posted and received etc and most of the test pieces, all of which are unmarked, normally arrive within two days even the 2nd class post.
Do you remember the days when we had morning and afternoon post, I get my mail about once a day at 11.30am, what about yours?
ours arrives anytime up to 4.30pm these days.
All 1st. and 2nd. Class Letters are sorted together, hence no need to use 1st.Class. I was told that by a Post Office Sorter.

Yes they wanted over £5 to guarantee next day delivery. It's only a letter for goodness sake ! From Surrey to Sussex. Oh well, it may arrive by Christmas. I also sell on ebay, all over the world but not Asia and I have never lost anything either. In fact some second class parcels to UK arrive next day - So can't really complain.
I work as a delivery postman and I would make the following points:
Smurfchops , the £5 for a special delivery doesn't just guarantee next-day delivery it guarantees compensation up to a value of something like £2000- see Royal Mail website for precise details .
Everhelpful - the 1st and 2nd class mail are segregated by machine , the 1st class is processed and dispatched the same night (hopefully for next-day arrival) whereas 2nd class is not processed until the following morning .

Letters from banks etc . - these are large postings which are dispatched to the Royal Mail from various mailing houses/factories . The date that we receive them from these mailing houses may be some days later than the date which is printed on the inside of the letter .
Micmak - the Royal Mail is not a load of sh1t , as you put it , it is an organisation which is very effective at delivering large volumes of mail accurately as you will see over the next 4 weeks . The 2nd class service offered to you is subsidised - you pay less for it than what it costs to deliver it . It's your postal service - you should cherish it .
