Is this war or just a few athletes playing games?
13,500 troops are being deployed, that's 4,000 more than are deployed in Afghanistan
/// The Royal Navy's largest ship, 22,500-tonne helicopter carrier HMS Ocean, would be based in Greenwich for the duration of the Games, ///
/// while assault vessel HMS Bulwark would be moored in Weymouth, where the sailing events will take place. ///
/// The air security plan includes Typhoon aircraft at RAF Northolt, helicopters operating from HMS Ocean and "appropriate" surface to air missile systems. ///
I wonder if the terms of engagement have been worked out, and I wonder if the U.S. will be making similar provisions?

The olympics is London is a prime target for a terrorist attack with the whole world looking in - look what happened in Munich to the Israeli athletics team, so yes we need all the security that is available - do they know someting we don't - well I don't think they are going to tell us what alert we will be on for the fortnight of the games.

If we look at "worst case scenario" we only have to look at the Twin Towers attacks.
An attack that had them hijacking one or more planes and crashing them into the Olympic Stadium would be just what the terrorists would love, so you have to be prepared for that.
Of course how you stop a lone madman with a load of explosives in a rucksack wandering around the Olympic grounds amongst thousands of people, or someone carrrying a rucksack bomb on a train as it goes through Stratford station.
Makes you wonder if it was actually worth winning the Olympics.

Maybe operating our forces like this is to give some comfort to the general population everything is in hand. However it seems all this is useless when confronted with a suicide bomber. As these are the chosen weapon for terrorists at the moment in Iraq and Afghanistan make sure you stand well away from an Eastern gentleman wearing a beard.
A sensible measure and yes, they may have some forward concerns.
I bet the Chinese had their forces on standby and operationally active as well.
It is an unfortunate downside of the Olympics in the modern day that such security is needed. Has been since Munich and gets to be more of a demand as the Games roll by.
