Pentatonic scale.

I know my pentatonic scale, but how do you know what key to improvise in when some one is doing a chord progression? Eg, when some one is playing in Am, I have to mess about with root notes until I found one which sounds good, and then I improvise in it. But this takes time. I think Sft42 was talking a while back about dominants and tonics and stuff, and I know that has something to do with it. Help!
