Just dyed my hair a 'medium brown' but it has come out far darker than expected...can i dye over it with a lighter brown without it going ginger?

Putting a lighter brown on top wouldn't make a difference I would think. Is it a permanent dye?

I would suggest using Head and Shoulders to strip the colour first; this is what my hairdresser has always recommended if I'm not happy with any home colouring I do.

Just dye it black and go for the Goth look ;-)

(As Erin-x suggests, it's unlikely that a lighter dye will help).

Vosene works as a colour stripper as well. If it is semi permanent I would just wait on it fading a bit along with using Vosene or Head and Shoulders. A lot of people buy the Colour B4 stuff but I would be wary of using it myself.

Hi, - don't panic. (yet), look up Scott Cornwall - Colour B4.

It will take out all un natural dye from your hair. Depending on what you have done to it before now, there is no telling what you may find underneath, however, providing your hair has not become porous, you will be able to choose a better colour to dye over it with.

This stuff, shrinks the dyes so it gets massaged out in one of the steps. It is NOT a peroxide, and does not bleach. Have you dyed your hair before, or was this the first time?

Out of interest, what dye did you use?

Yes its permanent, I did a strand test first but it looks completely different with a whole head of it lol!

I'll try head & shoulders in morning...i'm hoping it looks lighter in daylight and get the stuff from boots, if i'm still not happy i'll go get a few low lights put in it at hairdressers!

The Head and Shoulders wont strip all the colour at once.. it does it very gradually. And I wouldn't rush into the Colour B4.. wait a week or so.. it may grow on you :)

Just to follow up - I have used the colour b4, it is considerably preferable to going the hairdressers and being attacked with bleach which is horrible for your hair. The only thing with the colour B4, is that as so many dyes have bleach in them (when they do not look like they would) you could end up lighter than your natural colour, but that does give a good base to redye it. Giving your hair a few days break.

Genuinely it is not a product to be scared of. I researched the crap out of it after John Friedas new foam dye turned my hair mahogany, when it should have been medium blonde.

I agree though that it is worth just trying the Vosene/Head and Shoulders thing first and see how you feel.

I agree with Lunaraine about the John Frieda foam... Mine turned out the right colour but only after doing it for the THIRD time tonight! It goes so patchy... I just wouldn't bother with it again.

I'd go to a hairdresser and get it sorted properly. I once had a disaster and my hair ended up brittle and dry trying home remedies.

I have also done that and gone too dark . Use fairy liquid wasing up liquid and do a few washes but you will have to condition it well afterwards.

Should read washing up liquid. Don't put any other colour on it will be a disaster.

You jest Chris, but I did that once to try and cover up to some horrendous highlights my friend had put in my hair. Unfortunately I didn't realise it was blue black and and didn't go down very well with my tutor when I went to college the next day - probably because I was doing a hairdressing course.

Goldilocks is right, even permanent brown colourants will fade over a few washes. In two weeks time you'll probably think it isn't dark enough!!
