so you will recognise them and want to try them when you are browsing at the perfumes

I just go in a prefume shop and do some testers
The adverts never tell you anything you might actually like to know about the perfume, such as what it smells like.
Yes, 4getmenot, but you're probably buying for yourself.

At this time of the year, millionsof guys will be buying fragrances for their partners (or their mothers, etc). The vast majority of them won't have a clue as to what to buy, so they're likely to heavily influenced by advertising.

i.e. the ads aren't aimed at the people who will WEAR the perfumes; they're aimed at those who will BUY them!
I watched a complicated one today for Chanel Number 5. Lovely girl seemed to attract a guy from the past into the middle of a train station or could have been an airport terminal where he approached and kissed her from behind her back. I think it probably took a bit more than a dab of perfume to achieve this trick.

Tootrue - very little perfume is bought by women.

What men buy is the promise - splosh this on the girlfriend / wife, and she will turn into a raving nympho.

So why do women buy socks and underpants for their blokes.... ?
The trouble with buying someone else perfume is that you don't know whether they'll like the smell or not.
Question Author
because we at least know what they look like. Bloks probably havent got a clue what smell we would like to wear, just what they want us to wear.
