I have an extractor fan in the ceiling of my bathroom and it has started making a strange knocking sound every 2 - 3 seconds.
Any idea what could be causing it and if it is still safe to use?
Thanks
How long have you had it? They don't last for ever - I think I'm on my third in 25 years. The bearings of the fan might have simply worn out. They aren't megabucks to buy but you need a bit of electrical common sense to install them.
Have found my receipt. Bought on 07/06/2006 and it says DX200T Fan Expalair. If it is the bearings will I need to get an electrician out and do you know how much that would cost please?
Sounds like it's gone off its axis and is knocking against the surround.
Sometimes, if someone has been naughty and not ducted it to outside, bits of wood or debris get stuck in there. If it is ducted, give it a good thump with your hand. Otherwise, they're cheap and easy to replace. :o)
As far as I know it isn't ducted outside. All I know is the loft is above it but I am too ancient to get up there to look. It cost me £55.52 5 yrs ago so they have probably have gone up since then and then there's the cost of fitting it.
Would it be cheaper for me to get an electrician out to have a look at it first do you think?
