we are going to our daughters but taking the cooked turkey with us so beyond that have no idea. It will be wierd not DOing Xmas but like your wife I have been ill so not doing the cooking. What you have planned sounds great and I am sure she will be pleased ...lots of brownie points in your credit account. Have a lovely Xmas .

Hi Wendilla - I can manage a stew etc, but I can't do a roast beef. lamb etc is fine though.
cazz - what I do is get some sliced turkey carved off the bone in the supermarket and heat it through in the gravy for junior - he wont eat duck and insists on turkey rather than chicken as that is christmassy. he has also asked for figgy pudding but he can get lost on that one!!!

annie - the trick with any roast is to allow the meat to rest well once you have cooked it. Warm plate, cover the meat with alufoil and a clean tea towel - for a decent joint of beef, let it rest for 20-30 mins. What happens is that the juice in the meat goes to the centre during cooking and the resting allows the capillaries to reopen and the juice to flow backwards to give that delish, juicy taste.
no sit down starter but we have tiny onion, cheese and olive scones (a la delia smith) spread with cream cheese and a bit of something on top with our bucks fizz before we head into the dining room.
they we'll be having what we all prefer - traditional turkey, with cranberry and chestnut stuffing, locally made sausages wrapped in bacon, carrot and swede (or maybe carrot and sweet potato crush) sprouts with chestnuts and lardons, roasties, peas, probably broc.
followed by our own home made christmas pud with brandy sauce, or belgian chocolate melt in the middle pud, or salty caramel melt in the middle pud.
followed by a good snooze i should think..

We're having toasted sandwiches and crisps. Just tried to buy my Christmas dinner from Sainsburys and my daughter threw a complete melt down refused to sit in trolley and being 33 weeks pregnant decided my blood pressure wasn't up to the challenge, so promptly left the store. Should anyone be passing Sainsbury's Swindon there is a full Christmas dinner ready for purchasing and cooking in a trolley on the biscuit aisle . . . good luck!
