Happy Christmas everyone. I downloaded IE8 a little while ago (at least I thought I did!) but when I visit some websites I get a message saying outdated browser detected and I should upgrade to IE8. When I click on Help on the menu bar it mentions IE8 in Whats new in IE8, and in About IE. What version do I have?

The last option in the help menu is "About Internet Explorer" and when you select that a pop-up window tells you exactly which version you are running.

bibblebub -About Internet Explorer says IE8 but why do the websites say I have only IE6?
Have you tried deleting your browsing history using

Tools > Internet Options > General > Browsing history > Delete...

If that doesn't work, can you give an example of such a site?
Clear your cache.

Depending on what version of Windows you have .Soon Microsoft will update your IE to the latest version for you through automatic updates . The process will start in January in Australia and Brazil first and the rest of the world to follow.
