My BIL has a disc belonging to a past relative and he doesn't know who he was could be his grandmother's brother in law or husband. I think this was a WW1 inscribed 4 E. Yorks Regiment, CE, R E Taylor 4696. The disc is a dull reddish colour not metal as far as I can make out. The Grandmothers name was Elisa Anne Taylor, nee Mainprice from Hull. East Yorkshire. That is all I know. I've looked at ancestry but no luck. Bit of a long shot, anyone any ideas?
Sounds like an identity disc ('dog tag' in american):

Each soldier had two, one was cut off the dead body for identifaction and 'accounting'.
Sadly, just the one may indicate the owner ied in combat.
Thank you so much Mosaic that is really helpful, and so quick too. Now I can pass on this information, hopefully I'll get to know more about the Grandmothers link to him. Thanks again.
