I don't think neil2 is able to respond on his own threads so perhaps we should assume PASTA is right and he got the clues mixed up

Thanks katburd- at least I can stop looking now. I tried assuming one letter in turn was wrong but couldn't find anything, but never figured all 3 might be wrong so I missed the obvious answer

I speak Italian and am married to one, but cannot think of a single Italian word that would be appropriate. For a start, almost without exception, the words end with a vowel!

I'm still smiling at all this, I still have the crossword and have looked at what neil2 may have done wrong but can't work it out, until he gets back to us using your helpful info. and guidance :)
