we are after a new mattress that will suit both of us. I have a degenerative disc in my neck, and my partner has problems with bulging discs in his lower back...he is forever getting spasms in his lower back muscles. Have any abbers similar problems and which is the best mattress to choose??? Ive had memory foam pillows and found them too hard...they make my ear go numb!!!

My OH had spondilitis and could only sleep with a sturdy board under an ordinary sprung mattress.
I have a long term lower back back problem - major ops etc - have recently bought a good quality memory foam mattress and I love it. Do a bit of research though as some people find them hot to sleep on (I don't) and it's not adviseable to use electric blankets with them.
I have a lot of back problems and find that our good quality mattress with a memory foam topper is a really good option. Husband has a bad back and doesn't get on with a Tempur memory foam mattress. We compromised and I am glad now we went for the topper option on a good mattress.
Memory foam mattresses are definitely a 'marmite' product - many people swear by them, others swear at them.

"Try before you buy" - or buy with a return/exchange guarantee - if you can find a store that will do that ...
I have back problems and have a memory foam topper though it's probably a bit squashed now after years of use.

I spotted some bounceback pillows on sale on BHS yesterday, two for £6 on a big discount so hoping to pick some up later.

I love having a V pillow too for support (including on the sofa) though you don't seem to be able to get the cheaper ones like you used too, more more expensive orthapaedic ones.
We have a good quality memory foam mattress that we couldn't do without now. You do get warm but in some way that aids my back, however, because you tend to wake up in the same position that you go to sleep in you don't move about naturally and I find that I am as stiff as hell in the morning. So there are arguments for both types of mattress. We don't sleep well on anything other than a memory foam mattress now though despite a few aches and pains in the morning...............xx
are the MF pillows good ?
I find them too hard but we bought 'cheap' ones from Argos. Mother in law had free pillows with her mattress but again they didn't get on with them as they were too hard. I'm only guessing but I think the more you pay for them the better they are. We paid £25 for two mf pillows which I think is expensive anyway, I like mine now because it has softened (2 years later) but OH doesn't.
ive seen one for £10, but dont want to purchase it if its hard,!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't like "sprung" mattresses and I don't like memory-foam either. For me (and my dodgy back) the best choice is a latex mattress eg made by Dunlopillo - really wouldn't choose anything else.
If you get very warm in the night DO NOT buy any mattress with memory foam (even a topper) we did, and its such a nuisance as I'm always too hot, it retains your body heat for ages , I hate ours but its far too expensive to change.

thanks guys!! we gonna have a look about tomorrow but think i've gone off the idea of memory foam!!!
I bought a cheap double memory foam one from Amazon- it was only about £100! It is actually (like most) 3" of memory foam glued to normal foam. It was all I could afford and was a good cheap way to try it out. The memory foam is amazing, but mine has gone flatter on the bit of bed I always sleep on. I found a topper no good as it made my bed too tall, and I got hip and knee pain from having to leap up onto it. I would like to try a really expensive Tempur mattress though. I would never not have memory foam now. I also got two memory foam pillows and yes, I also find them too hard. They are like two tall brick pillows. Weirdly comfortable but have not helped my neck pain. You lie on them and kind of stay put for the whole night. I would like some much flatter ones but not sure they exist. See if you can try an expensive memory foam mattress and return it if you don't get on with it- but I bet you will!
My memory foam matress forgot all about me!!! It went flat where I normally sleep within a few months and never returned! So I now have a Posturepaedic matress which is quite a lot better. Still not perfect though, but that is because I have two replacement knees, a badly damaged back & neck etc., so can't expect miracles! I would so love to have a pain free night though!!
One thing I found with the topper, the elastic you try and hook round the mattress to keep it in place is a bit rubbish if you have a thicker mattress. Mine won't reach properly or stay put so it tends to slide over a bit and won't stay in one place, not like it's slippy while I'm sleeping but a pain shoving it about to put it back in place when making the bed (especially if you have pain/mobility issues anyway).
I really feel for you carakeel as I have an old rock climbing back injury that flares up every so often. Ages ago we got an electric bed from an American company.
This allows fine tuning of the posture. The best part was that when the mattress began to wear they replaced it free even though we had had it for donkey's years.
