How much would i have to pay to send a book as a parcel that weighs roughly 500g on first class ?
Maybe there are other services I can use to parcel a book of this weight to save money ?

Its just that if you are, we could show you more clearly how to work out the price of your postage, and list it up on ebay and show the postage for every option including overseas postage. We are trying to be helpful here. There are a lot of us with a lot of experience of selling worldwide on ebay, and pricing our own postage.

I send parcels regulary to USA ,got fed up with Post office charges and delayed delivery dates so I Googled interparcel, when you put the measurements in they give you up to 4 quotes on price and delivery, and they collect from your home or workplace. Hope this is helpful,I'm very satisfied with them.
On eBay you start the auction at the minimum which you are willing to accept for the book - the postage on books has a ceiling so if your book + packing weighs more than the value of the postage allowed you can build in a little extra price into the minimum cost of the book, to allow for that. Bear in mind also that if you are mailing a book, you can used Printed Paper rate if you are mailing outside the UK - I do - which takes the price down a bit.
I've got a print-off from the website which I use as the basis for all by eBay postal charges, and to send a 500g parcel in the UK first class is £2.48, the next stage is to 750g = £3.05.
Overseas Europe approx £6 or just under £4 printed paper rate
Overseas worldwide approx £11 or £6.50 PPR
I hope this helps

sophie - are you referring to Pricing in Proportion? The size difference between a letter and a large letter has nothing to do with the size of a letter box, it's just the sizes that the Post Office decided to mark the change between a letter and a large letter. It is based on the US Postal service system, and most US addresses don't have a letter box.
Oh, and recorded delivery is NOT tracked. It is signed for upon delivery and you can then check on line that it has been received. The only way with Royal Mail to track an item is to send it special delivery or with parcelforce. This seems excessive for a book which is probably not worth more than £46 and it doesn't matter if it doesn't get there the next working day. Recorded delivery (which costs 77p on top of the cost of postage) is probably sufficient.
