I suppose some families have them for the kids, who will be in bed at midnight.
I'm sure my parents used to pretend that it was midnight on New Year's Eve when it was really about 9pm, just to get us off to sleep early so that they could enjoy the rest of the evening and see in the New Year properly without us. Perhaps that's what the fireworks were for tonite. We've just had some go off here about 10 mins ago too!

Best wishes for a Happy and (peaceful!) New Year!
New Years eve is one of the occasions where the 'curfew' on letting off fireworks between 11pm and 3 am is lifted. Lots of people have fireworks as part of a new year party, they do an early show for the kids and leave the 'main event' for midnight.
Fireworks have been used to celebrate New Year many centuries before we came up with 5th November.
This has reminded me I still have a pack of rockets ready for midnight , almost forgot thanks lankeela.
I seriously wish the folk who let off fireworks any time would go and sit on a rocket. I can live with and manage fireworks on the usual occasions but we have had them for the last three nights as well, the dogs hate it.
