If ntl are available in your street, they can run a line into your property for broadband only (no phone) if thats what you mean ? its 9.99 pr month.
Unless you've got a cable company offering broadband in your area, you'll have to get a phone line installed. BT will charge 74.99 (unless you live in a really isolated location and, consequently, it takes more than 100 hours work to dig trenches, etc).

(PS: If you've got a cable company in your area, you'll almost certainly know about it because they'll have posters on every other billboard for miles around - it's a very competitive business!).

"Now" offer a wireless broadband connection which requires no landline. Prices start at 10 per month for 256k, and includes free modem. No engineer visits needed. Not available in all areas yet, as far as I know, but text your postcode to 63669 (standard text charge) and they'll tell you if your area is covered. Or go to www.now.com

I was keen on the idea of 'Now' wireless broadband as I rent and didn't want to have lines installed when I might have to move in the near future. Sadly it's not available in my area despite the fact I live in London which makes me wonder whether how much of the country can actually get it.
You're right, hermia. Coverage seems to be very limited at the moment, so maybe it's a bit of a longshot!

Unless I'm missing something here ... !! And I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong :(

Wireless broadband just sends the information from the router to the PC without the need for wires.

So ... you need to get the broadband into the house - either through a phone line or through a cable company (e.g. NTL). This goes to a modem which is conected to a router. A wireless router sends the information without wires to your laptop / PC etc.

I'm not very good at techie things, but I've been online with 'Now' for a couple of weeks because I didn't want the added expense of a landline. The modem connects to your PC via USB or ethernet, and picks up an airborne signal. Their website explains it better!

Okay - thanks Lindy Lou. I should have read your earlier answer.

Had a look at the Now site - sounds okay - although doesn't do my area (NW) yet.
