I've found the union very useful in my work - not only to protect the interests of the employee, but also to make sure that I was supported as employer in a difficult situation.
If it hadn't been for the unions my Dad would never have got compensation for a head injury sustained from an iron girder glancing off his head ( his employer neglected to supply hard hats) and he would never have been compensated for industrial injury from which he subsequently died and my Mum would never had a pension .
Need I say any more on the usefulness of the Unions? providing they do it right, for the right reasons ( to protect the work force from harassment, bullying, intimidation from employers, & also asking you to do something that themselfs cannot do, there is no problem.
Sorry weecalf - I don't agree with strikes, they are like a naughty child throwing its toys out of the pram because it can't get its own way. I agree with a lot on here - if you don't work why should you get paid?
