i have a sony camcorder

and want to transfer a family video onto my laptop so i can burn it on dvds, i also want to edit the video and cut a few bits out. I dont have the software to the camcorder, but have a usb wire to attach it to the laptop, but nothing is happening, any help is most appreciated. thanks
