pain on breathing

I have developed a slight pain when taking a deep breath. It feels like a small stabbing sensation and is located below my sternum but from within (oesophagus or trachea maybe?) I also find that my breathing is slightly laboured but that is hardly surprising as ive recently given up smoking.
I have to see my gp in a couple of weeks anyway and will mention it then but just wondered if anyone had any idea whats causing it.
Im a 46 yr old male and in otherwise good health.
(BTW, I have no acid or indigestion)

From what you have described and the absence of cough, i would suggest that it is a strain of the junction where the ribs meet the sternum (breast bone) due maybe to some unaccustomed exercise, e.g lifting.

Just monitor the situation and mention it to your GP in a couple of weeks.

Thanks squad. I do actually have a cough though, but again i presume its down to my lungs clearing out after finally giving up smoking.
