Well assuming we are talking central heating rather than local (fireplace) heating.

Central heating systems were used in northern Roman cities in the 100s. Air heated by furnaces was led through empty spaces under the floors and out of pipes in the walls.

In 1716, water was first used to spread the heat. This system was used by Martin Triewald, a Swedish engineer, on a greenhouse at Newcastle upon Tyne. Bonnemain, a French architect, made its first industrial use on a coop, at Ch�teau du P�cq, near Paris.

Pompeii and Herulaneum were destroyed in AD79 and they had a very competant heating system with hot baths and vents for hot air to warm other rooms.
