Yes, alumnae fits but that is a plural and the partial clue refers to a graduate. I think alumnae will be right once we see the exact clue.

Yes my Latin was done many years ago and I forgot the plural of a noun ending in "a"

Just by chance I came across this in my newspaper this morning.

"The female graduates or former students of a school or university collectively (7)"

So the required answer definitely was in the plural.
