Better word for change

Hi all, long time no speak and all that..

I'm looking for a better word than 'change' as in the towns landscape has..

The pits shut down but units for business have spring up.......

I've gone brain dead?

Instead of changed you could say evolved, altered.
Instead of 'spring up' you could say 'replaced them', sprung up, opened up...

lol, I'd actually mean to put 'sprung' but either I typed it wrong or Steve Jobs decided he likes spring better?? :-))
