Simple answer here is 'don't do it' unless you don't have several days available to take greatly better though more circuitous routes.
One alternative is the Indian Pacific overnight train direct - but beware of train accommodation choice for the exactly 24-hours trip and quite high cost.
With wheels go through Melbourne and on to the Great Ocean Road which has interesting towns and loads of motels etc.
Better still is, having reached Melbourne spend a day or so around the Mornington Peninsula, use the car ferry from Sorrento, at the tip of the peninsula, to reach and skirt Geelong, then onto the Great Ocean Road. A week minimum would be good to enjoy this tour.
Whatever you do at Adelaide don't miss the Barossa Valley for your choice of plonk or quality wine - Tanunda and Nuriootpa have good stays for overnight.
Enjoy each day.
