Could some one tell me the best way to remove sweat stains from white clothing, or, for that matter, what works better at cleaning clothes in general?

I've heard of two methods to remove sweat stains. My mother always used to swear by soaking the area in white vinegar before washing while I've also heard that rubbing on a paste made of water and baking soda also works.
