Can't open .ics file attachment

I have received an email with an .ics attachment. When I try to open it I get a pop-up; "This file does not have a program associated with it ............ create an association in the folder options control panel' I have looked at the "Free reader downloads" but don't seem to be free! How can I open this file please ?

.ics files appear to be iCalendar data files. They should just contain plain text so right-clich on the filename, select 'open with...' and choose Notepad.

OR
You could change the file extension to .txt and double-click it.
