as petrol is about 9p a litre cheaper, servicing can be more frequent for diesels, if you do 10k a year then maybe petrol would be better,
OK so others will have their opinion.
try using the calculator below for estimates by entering fuel consumption for said vehicles.

Winter starting provided the Glow plugs are in order a Diesel, they hardly fail with damp starting but it all depends how the car has been serviced, the diesel holds its price better, the MOT is as good as the garage that fill it out! what I mean by that, there are a lot out there that will mot to get rid of the Car / Van, regards the Cam belt / chain, make sure if you bye that you get this in writing & that the Tensions has also been changed, again, if you do not know anything about the working of a car take someone with you that does.
Yes, i am living proof of that last comment, we spent £1100 on a peugeot 206 last october, wasn't till we handed over the cash and took it home, got it to the mechanic about a week or so later to find out it was a death trap!
There is no way I'm buying any car till its been properly checked out! mechanics can be quite frustrating though, they know they can take there time, coz your always going to need them!!

I've seen people stung for their cash Wildchld, if you do buy ask about a warranty if any & that depends on the price you pay, do not buy in the rain as this can give out false looks on the body work ( Imperfections due to body filler!!!work) ask if you pay cash what is the discount, do not jump straight in but barter don't forget & the garage knows this to, there are thousands of cars out there for sale but the difference is, the garage wants your money BUT you can look else where for a car.
