You could (and indeed many would) argue that it's not 'working for nowt' - unless of course the people involved are not in receipt of any benefits.

I do think there is a significant potential problem in that it may distort the market in certain jobs - with employers taking a succession of people on 'placements' rather than employing permanent staff.

But, in principle, insisting that people get used to "get up, turn up, do your job, go home" is not a bad thing - and even better if the placement provides some useful skills and possibly leads to an offer of 'real' employment .
Not a prayer, I wouldn't work for a meagre wage either. In fact I just wont work, so there!
It depends on your circumstances. For instance if you were on the breadline you would need some money to live. But presumably you would get benefits otherwise it would just not work.
You continue on your current benefits - possibly with some extra to cover travel costs ...
Would rather do something than sit about. Although obviously money earning is the prime consideration in work, you get a lot more out of it in terms of purpose, friendship, social interaction etc - well, that is if you get on well with you fellow workmates. I worked somewhere in the past where the boss was difficult and no one seemed to get on as a result. There was no xmas 'do' because no one wanted to go. Wouldn't work somewhere like that again even if you paid me.
