I do think there is a significant potential problem in that it may distort the market in certain jobs - with employers taking a succession of people on 'placements' rather than employing permanent staff.
But, in principle, insisting that people get used to "get up, turn up, do your job, go home" is not a bad thing - and even better if the placement provides some useful skills and possibly leads to an offer of 'real' employment .

Would rather do something than sit about. Although obviously money earning is the prime consideration in work, you get a lot more out of it in terms of purpose, friendship, social interaction etc - well, that is if you get on well with you fellow workmates. I worked somewhere in the past where the boss was difficult and no one seemed to get on as a result. There was no xmas 'do' because no one wanted to go. Wouldn't work somewhere like that again even if you paid me.
