My computer has suddenly started having loads of pop up ads, even when Internet Explorer isn't open. I've done a Ad-aware search and deleted various 'trackers' etc. However they still appear. Not only that but when I performed a disc clean up (in the windows system tools) and there are about 8 folders that when i try to delete I am told are system folders (they contain loads of jpgs's and internet data and gif's) and if deleted may mean windows doesn't work properly. What have i done? Are the two related?

You probably have be infested with adware. I would recomend using a program like Ad-aware 6.0 or Spybot search and destroy 1.2 (I would recommend the latter). Both programs are available from www.download.com. Also install a program like window webkiller availiible for free at http://www.anarelion.com/aalku/WebWindowKiller/?S=

this helps

can i delete the the folders that appear in the old internet files folder when i do a system clear up though they claim to be System files and say deleting them will mean windows not working - how did they get in the old internet files?
you got a tough cleanup problem Malandro; infection possibly from Gator or Adware [n.b. Adware Not Adaware; Adaware is friendly]. Firstly, don't delete where you can uninstall, this why 'unsafe' messages appear. did you get your adware from kazaa or where? You on XP? create a System Restore Point b4 you try to fix; or back up your registry to My Documents. if on W98, you can create a restore point from Registry Checker in System Information/ Tools but it is done daily automatically. To restore from W98 you restart into real Dos and type scanreg /restore - hopefully you won't need to do any restores though. After you uninstall your rogue programs do a search/find for.. oh here's another sneaky; Winstart001.exe this is not a system anything it is an adbot nasty. clipgenie? also a nasty. info here about that and others; http://mywebpages.comcast.net/robotarmy/P2P/grokst
er.htm
find and delete .
Your temporary internet files; safe to delete them all everything except index.dat, which you clear with Sweeper by emery [freeware]. blah, blah, loads more.. get Winpatrol [freeware] here;http://www.winpatrol.com/stats.html good luck with your task :-) the mind boggles at their dirty trix.
clip> can i delete the the folders that appear in the old internet files folder < Don't delete these folders, delete their contents.. see my above answer.

Thanks everyone. In the end I did some ad-aware scans and deleted loads of data miners and various other bugs. I then deleted all the 'old intrnet files' folder and waited for everything to crash. Thankfully it didn't happen and all is running smoothly, except the Jview folder being missing and thus not being able to open the main (it's a java thing i believe) it's been poping up since i did an adaware scan but doesn't seem to affect anything. If any one knows how to get rid That'd be good.
