They do look a bit shiny and new for a while, but they eventually calm down to a more natural slate colour. They're very durable in all situations.
Your problem will be your roof structure. Unless it was slated previously, it most likely won't be able to take the increased load of a slate roof. Also, the timbers will not be set out to take battens.

You may be lucky though. You may well have conventional rafters etc, with board and felt over. Can you see the rafters?

thanks for your reply yes i can see the rafters that look pretty solid, i have had a few quotes, one said the roof would need to be slightly higher by 2" the battening would do that though, just a case of if i can afford the extra money and would it be worth it, or would the felt with 3 layers fully torch bonded final layer turbo torched be as good, maybe in the end it would just come down to the look, what do you think?. thanks for you time.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, i have gone with the felt roof as i do not plan on selling my lovely chalet ever, the roofing firm i have chosen come recommended and i have seen some of their work, the only reason would be if i'm unable to travel the distance in the future.
Thank you so much for your good advice.
