Finished but don't see the wordplay on a couple of answers:
2dn - In a loop, knotty - with head finally to sag? (6) I have NOOSED
6dn - Plump canon (5) I have ROUND. I see the connection with plump but not canon
Any explanations please?

Thanks for the explanations Lie-in-King - hadn't heard of canon in musical terms before and Noosed seemed a bit woolly given the clue - all is now clear. Thanks once again

2d Noosed (in a loop) - move '(hea)d' (final letter) in 'nodose' (knotty)
6d Round - 'plump' & 'canon' (repetitive musical composition, sung in unison)

.cannot do 24 ac (novel attempt.....T?A???); 22 dn (country talk.... G????)
or 26 ac (a republic....R?D???
Hi Operatix - it's always best to post the full clues so that people without the puzzle can more readily help you. Also, beginning your own thread would ensure your Q's are seen on the front page - they can be missed when added to another thread :-)

That said -

24a Novel attempt to conceal a bit of one's weight? (6)
22d Country talk being broadcast (5)
26a A republic in Africa's overthrown queen (6)

24a - Trilby (novel, by George du Maurier) - '1 lb' (in) 'try'
22d Gab-on
26a Regina (queen) - 'a Niger' (back = overthrown)
