Childrens BBC Drama from way back

Does anyone remember a BBC kids drama from late 80's/early 90's as follows? It had a dark haired kid with glasses who went to stay at a relatives country type house. Think he had a St Christophers cross and think there was a statue of St Christopher which at one point came to life and caried the kid on its shoulder. Not much to go on but it's driving me mad. Beginning to think it was just aparticularly vivid dream I had! Thanks.
