I went with dols being short for dollar pieces.

...nevertheless have mailed the editor: such an ambiguity after hours of toil!Both solutions are perfectly defensible on all counts: I have demanded that both be considered correct! What do the rest of you think?

i do not equate idols and icons if saints worship as it were they will use icons which as has been said is an anagram of coins.

I think that there are several solutions in this puzzle which don't work correctly - 3D, 14D, 16A and I can't for the life of me parse 12A. Several other clues are not so good either in my opinion, and I don't think that this is Crucible anywhere near his best.
