connecting laptop

trying to connect second laptop to my router. It picks up router and asks for security key which, I type in (number off bottom of router) but will not connect is there something else I need to do? Can anyone help me do this?

What version of windows do you have, and also what's the latest service pack you have installed (right click on my computer (or computer) on the start menu or desktop and select properties)

Hi chuck it is windows 7 but cannot see where it tells me what service pack it is

that's OK... it doesn't really matter seeing as it's windows7 (which service pack would have been important if it was windowsXP)

What is the make and model of the router? and do you have any thing else connected wireless to it?

it just says netgear wireless modem on it. It is connected to another laptop + my desktop computer

You will have been given a "broadcast name" and password (also known as security key) by your ISP, probably when you got the router.

It may be stuck on a label on the router somewhere, or on a letter sent to you by your ISP, or maybe in an email from your ISP.

None of us will know it as it is particular to your ISP set up.

thanks VHG don't remember that nothing on router just remember on phone and was talked thru setting it up.

I think that is for logging on to the router to change some of the router settings (the router admin logon).

It is not the same as the broadcast name and security key.

However if you CAN logon to the routers admin setting you can set the securtiy key yourself.

If you have Windows 7 installed on your other Laptop that is connected wirelessly you can check the password that is using.

To do this you need to connect the computer that does connect. Click on the wifi icon near the clock. Right Click on the network you are connected to and click properties. There should be a Tab called Security. Click this Tab and there is a field called Network Security Key. If you click the Tick Box below this called "Show Characters". This is the password your computer is using to connect to the wireless network.
Hope this helps. I am not sure if it works the same on other versions of Windows as I can't check.
