One of my terriers has a very scurfy raised rash all they way....

down the centre of his back. He has had it since just before Xmas. It hasn't got any worse up until now which is why I haven't yet taken him to the vets. He doesn't seem bothered by it but when I stroke him there you can tell it itches him.

However, I noticed yesterday that the hair is coming out in parts of where the rash is. I have bathed him in coal tar shampoo and also have been gently rubbing in some Tea Tree cream. He has been treated with Advocate since a pup and I see no signs of fleas. His diet has not changed either. Naturediet and a plain terrier mix. No added rubbish. I also noticed a raised "Spot" on top of his head. It has been bleeding as I see a scab in the middle of it. Not sure if this is something different or something to do with the other rash.

My question is, are there any other human creams I can try before being charged horrendous amounts for the vet to look?

Google 'Demodectic mange' and see if that matches your dogs symptoms. (I think thats the right spelling.)

Try adding some oil to his food, or some sardines. However if it has been going on since befoe Christmas I would be taking him to the vet if he were mine.

I would take him to the vet. It does sound a bit like mange although if he's being treated regularly with Advocate he shouldn't get it. It is highly contagious so you might want to call your vet and discuss the symptoms first as if he thinks it could be mange he may want you to bring him when normal surgery is closed so as not to infect other animals in the waiting room

One of mine had something similar and as they have a double coat I only noticed it quite by accident when I was sitting waiting in the vets for something else. It wasnt mange, but a skin infection, and she had antibiotics, a shampoo and cream. You really do need to take him to the vets before it gets worse and ends up costing you more in the long run.
