Charles Stewart Royce (as in rolls royce) was born into aristocracy but I cant find where he was from.
That should read Charles Stewart Rolls

1, I think Marconi had a lot to do with it, however look up a Oliver Lodge, he came fron Cheshire and also had something to do with it at a Liverpool school.

2, Charles Rolls who later went on to meet Mr Royce and form Rolls-Royce car company at Crewe

Oliver Lodge came from Penkhull, Staffs, and I think he's the man you're looking for.
BTW, Oliver Lodge also invented the spark plug (Lodge was once a widely available brand of plug) and, coincidentally, was born in the house which later became the long-time home of Sir Stanley Matthews.

Many thanks to all of you who knew more than us. It's wonderful how much knowledge there is out there!

Thanks

Hi Narolines, I should have known where Oliver Lodge was from, my mum lived in Penkhull a few streets away from Lodge Road, which was named after him.
Just for the record, Rolls was born in Berkeley Square, London but his family were from Monmouthshire.
jrtv, you don't suppose his house was called Lodge Lodge, do you.....? Maybe not.....
