Just as a side thing, if he ever has to come into Edinburgh again, there is a public car park next to the station and the council building. I park there every day for work. There are loads of spaces every day and its much cheaper than most car parks and cheaper than parking on a meter, :)

Certainly in England if it's their cock up and something has broken down they are obliged to get you to your destination. When we lived in North Wales this frequently happened returning from London and you simply find a member of staff insist they get you there and they usually get you a taxi, but they don't generally do it unless you kick up a fuss.
obtain a "customer comments form" for the relevant train company for the disrupted journey (if Edinburgh presumably Scotrail or EastCoast), complete the form indicating the train on which the problem occurred and attach the train ticket for the journey. The extent of delay occasioned will determine the amount of recompense, but it will be provided in the form of travel vouchers, not cash or cheque.
during a period of disruption caused by flooding last year, a delay of 3.5 hours got me £45 worth of vouchers from virgin trains.
