Yes - I too have left a job on a matter of principle to support two colleagues. The manager couldn't understand and was saying "we specifically framed the redundancies to avoid affecting you" ...
And in general I will always help those who are making an effort to help themselves - even at some inconvenience to myself.
I tend to be less helpful to "my life is crap and the world is out to get me but I'm not doing anything about it"

two former colleagues of mine were hauled up before the boss after a minor but embarrassing bungle (this was recently, after I'd retired, so I heard about it second-hand). The boss told one of them - the one who was the last line of responsibility - he was getting a formal warning. The other one immediately stood up and said "If he's getting a formal warning, I want one too."
