I mean in a more general sense - parents getting upset that The Dark Knight was a 12a but are happy to let their kids throw a knife into the face of someone in COD (if they're good!)
Do you think it's because, as trigger says, "it's a game"? I.e. "Not real" (Unlike batman of course). Or because those who manage to get upset by this stuff understand that films can be affecting, but don't understand that games can be in the same way?
I think horror films are healthy for kids myself, it's good to be able to experience/excise fears in a safe environment.

Completely agree Ed, I do think that everyone's got a bit hair triggered about film ratings these days. Unless it's out and out porn, or violence simply for it's own sake and not aprt of the plot then I don't tend to censor too much what my younger kids watch. As for horror films, I remember they watched the Blair Witch Project, killing themselves laughing, and then decided they were going camping in the woods.lol- so yeah you're right kids enjoy being frightened by films, it's fun to them.
