... Considering a short break here. Where would be an ideal place to stay for a married couple, age 40? We like a drink, real ales, but not nightclubs. We like pretty towns / villages and browsing independent shops, nice meals and a bit of walking.

Any recommendations?

Personally I'd look more at Cowes or Ryde area. The towns on the east coast - Sandown, Ventnor and Shanklin - were like run down seaside towns that never left the 70s in my opinion. I haven't been for about 3 years so maybe I'm doing them a disservice.
