First numerical of 2012 and a fun puzzle. Looked daunting at first but it all fell into place with a fun ending

My brain must be totally addled becasue I can't get the numbers right at all, despite usually being able to do the numericals.

I've started from first principles several times, get the same answers for the first few numbers but then can't find a corret soltion for the top right corner.

Back to the drawing board I guess.

I now see the 'ambiguity' and I should have trusted the preamble. I had the right answer but it's much more satisfying to fully understand why.

I took ages to convince myself that I shouldn't have a restricted set of digits in column 3. Once I got over that mental block, this was very quick and straightforward. I guess the "ambiguity" - to which there is only one possible solution - is one of those abstruse things that makes nerds chuckle. Meh!

Have now returned to this one, after being unsuccessful. Once I got a correct list of items I realised that I had three spaces for the same number, but two items with that number and one that is one higher. Yet I have checked my maths right through and it seems to work. Where do I go from here?
