Are there no depths to which the unions will not sink?
Answers
We competed for the Olympics to be held here this year, the venues are complete, and whilst the games are taking place, this country will be the focus of world attention. I don’t have a great deal of interest in the games, but we’re staging them and personally I think we should have a little more pride in our country and certainly rather more self-respect...

Gromit, //OP is just a flimsy excuse for Union bashing, and the usual suspects eagerly join in.//
The usual suspects union bashing? No. This man is being ‘bashed’ because he is a vindictive trouble-maker, and he deserves to be ‘bashed’.
Jake, //Just because I am not some sort of mindless flag waving patriot doesn't mean I hate the UK //
I’m certainly not mindless, and that is why when this country hosts what should be a happy event that will be the focus of worldwide attention, I am patriotic.
//I see it warts and all and want to see it better//
No, you see only the warts – and only then when it suits you. Your idea of ‘better’ is certainly not my idea of ‘better’, that’s for sure.
I didn’t agree with us hosting the Olympics because, quite frankly, firstly I doubted we were up to it, and secondly, we can ill-afford it – and I’ve said as much on these pages previously. However, despite all the complaints here, the fact is it’s going to happen and any attempt to disrupt it now would be a negative and spiteful action. I simply don’t understand the mentality of people who take pleasure in seeing this country humiliated, or who wish ill upon something that is intended to promote worldwide goodwill and cohesion.

do believe we did have the democratic right, voted for London Mayor (Livingstone at time of olympic bid) - PM (Blair). The cost has been negligible to taxpayers - 50p/week I believe. The money that will flood into London (and other centres) during the weeks of the olympics (not forgetting) the paraolympics will benefit everyone. as for white elephant, me thinks that's the oldest (and most unoriginal) red herring ever. Has anyone seen the site in Stratford and seen what has been accomplished. The village will provide much need and most welcome low cost accomodation for the less well off in the future and the whole are has been lifted into the 21st Century. Stop knocking everything that is achieved in this country and get behind projects such as these. As for Mcluskey - he not worth wasting space on, total dinosaur and look what happened to them.

But that argument could be transferred to any public event. We did not vote on the Queen's Diamond Jubilee events, nor the marriage of William and Kate, nor the FA Cup final, and if we ever win Eurovision again, public money will go to sponsoring the event.
If every decision which required public funding were subject to democratic process, the country would grind to a halt, and let's not forget how much it would cost in administering this extra level of red tape.
However, £930,000 to float some rings down the Thames?
That's mental. Someone's pockets are being seriously lined there...

Sp Sorry I am not saying the Olympics shouldn't happen and I am not saying there won't be some public inconenince and cost.
What I am saying is there are ways and means for instance the Queens Diamond Jubillee is a bank holiday, if there was a 6 week bank holiday for the Olympics I wouldn't care, I would be quite happy.
Wquallly the cup final invoves 90k people for a day,if that in one part of London no objection.
However when people are going to have there lives seriously disrupted for an extended period and have no right to reply I think that is wrong.

The protection that unions/union workers enjoy is a lot more damaging to our economy than the olympics are. End the right to strike and the nation would be much better off. The minimum wage, employment law and welfare are all the protection that workers need. Select groups getting the extra ability of being able to artificially inflate their wages is seriously unfair to the rest of us.
They are not hypocrites SP, Perhaps some didn't want the Olympics maybe, but we have got them, so we are stuck.
This is just another example of the 'traitorous' Left-Wing, using this opportunity to discredit this country.
We are not helped by a weak Tory/LibDem government, what we need is another 'Maggie', to bring these Labour backed unions back down to size.
Apparently they are now stirring up London Transport employees to strike unless they get an increase in pay during the Olympic period.
Boris and Cameron should call their bluff and let them strike, the Army could be called in to do their job.

Scowie the right to withdraw your labour is a democratic right. How it is used however leaves a lot to be desired.
Employment law is bring radically change to benifit the employer. Welfare is being seriously weakened and the minimum wage is under attack.
Given that the Torys seem to think making you unemployed and then making you work for nothing is doing you a favour,
