When I was a kid in the 60'2, I went to a Catholic School. We were encouraged by the Teachers to give something up for Lent. I suggested that it would seem to be a good idea to give up sprouts, cabbage and liver, as I was always being told that these, although horrid, were "very good for you", so giving them up would be a big sacrifice.

I normally give up chocolate.
I don't think you have to be religious to give up something for Lent any more than you have to to give chocolate eggs at Easter or presents at Christmas.
You shouldn't just pinch the "fun" events and a bit of abstinance is good for self-discipline - it's not exactly observing the Ramadan fast!

I was told that I wasn't playing the game and should give up something I liked, rather than hated. I was sure that my logic was unimpeachable but I was sadly not able to convince any other grown up !
