dat and svcd

When I was running windows ME and 98 I could play .dat files from vcds with no problem. Now I'm using win 2k and it will not even recognise .dat files, so I can't even copy them to my hard drive. Any ideas why? Same computers, just different operating system. Second problem - if I encode movie to mpeg2 for svcd it plays okay on computer as mpg, but when made into svcd the motion is jerky. No problem with vcd. Tried burning slower. Using Nero.

For the first bit I think windows 2000 thinks that they are data files and are protected. You could try right clicking the .dat file and select open with... then select media player (or better still a DVD application). I have no idea about the second problem (except why not keep it as an .mpg?).

Thanks, I'll try that when I get home. As to the mpg, I want to play it on my dvd player and svcd is a good quality (or would be without the jerkiness). It's odd that the files play okay before going on a cd.
