Is there no way out of being guarantor, even if the guarantor is no longer working due to ill health & living on state benefits?

Don't take my word on this but I don't think you can excuse yourself from being a guarantor on a loan you've already signed agreements on. However, if the person with the loan fails to keep up payments and the lender came to you for the money I would think they'd be hard pushed to be successful if you are living off benefits and have no assets.
