To continue, you clearly have to be able to get though the door, along the aisle and fit in a seat - or buy 2?

Some airlines have been muttering about introducing something more formal. Having sat next to someone on a 10 hour flight who needed a seat and a half and couldn't sit still, I wish they would

Good question. Norh Americans are fatter than average (there that should start something!) so have a look at the report on http://www.aviationtoday.com/reports/crampedseat.htm which co-incidentally calls the generous sized ones a hazard to others in the event of emergency and 'impediments to crash survival' Brilliant!

Following a crash in Canada (9 dead + pilopt) in Jan 04, for males over age 12, the standard weight will be increased 13 pounds, to 206 lbs in winter and 200 lbs in summer.

For females over age 12, the standard weight will be increased 26 lbs., to 171 lbs in winter and 165 lbs in summer. These changes include a 5 lb increase per passenger for carry-on baggage. The new standard weight requirements take effect Jan. 20, 2005. In the meantime, TC urged that operators "voluntarily comply" with the amendments..(TC is Transport Canada, regulatory board)

The U.S. guidance suggests that adult American males are virtually the same weight, on average, as their Canadian counterparts, while American women are distinctly heavier than their Canadian cousins. In both countries, these average weights include carry-on bags.

Of interest, the FAA guidance points out a more rigorous standard for military transports. Department of Defense charter flights carrying military personnel must use actual passenger and baggage weights. (To view AC 120-27D, go to www.airweb.faa.gov/AC)

Standard Average Passenger Weights Compared (In pounds)
Gender Winter Summer
American adult 205 200
Canadian adult 206 200
American adult 184 179
Canadian adult 171 165
Sources: FAA, TC

As regard OBESE passengers, obviously this a growing problem for airlines. As would be expected El Al is the most concerned with the ever increasing weight.
