For the third time in recent weeks it has been suggested I stand in the local elections as a councillor. I am still thinking about it - I am committed to this area.
What do you want from a local councillor (city, rather than parish).

Someone comes to you as an independent and wants you to help get rid of those so and so pikeys/gypsies/travellers camping on the local beauty spot and spoiling the area. Next person wants your help in setting them up with a proper site as they are human beings and should be treated as such and thinks it is inhumane to keep moving them on. One of those people will be coming away pretty annoyed after a meeting with you. I suppose it you can please some of the people some of the time then you'd be doing OK:-)
Not good on committees ? Blimey, you won't be having much fun. That's because the typical councillor of my experience loves committees and thinks wasting a lot of time deciding to do nothing just yet is part of the fun. (Like you, I'm not ideal for committees; my approach is if something needs a decision one person should be instantly delegated to make it alone and the rest should trust him or her and approve it without more ado later!)
Bit worried by your fighting for clients on principles. Is that the same as 'on a point of principle'? Are you hoping to breed from them? Clients who fight on a point of principle should definitely be bred from! LOL
