Can anyone please tell me what this flower is?

The second picture isn't very clear but I wanted to show how long the stem of the plant is.
My Dad has been a keen gardener for years and this appeared in with other seeds that he had been sowing. Apparently it only has one flower per day and only ever one flower at a time.

All suggestions welcome.

It looks very similar (the flower) to the perennial geranium that grows outside prolifically in my garden, and that has reasonably straggly stems even outside. Good luck in identifying it properly.
Agree with Julia that it is that geranium that grows to about 18 inches. Lovely shocking pink flowers with black centres.
Just zoomed into the second pic and realise that the leaves that belong to the first flower are not like geranium leaves, so now unsure about the diagnosis.

Thanks so much, but do the leaves look like geranium leaves?
No they don't look like geranium leaves.

Hmm - what now tenrec?!

My Dad would be familiar with many many types of flowers but is stumped with this one. I'd love to be able to let him know what it is.
I don't know. Perhaps a trip to the library?
A corn cockle (agrostemma) ?

Well done Sunny D.
geranium sanguineum or phaeum?
Question Author
Anna - I think we are pretty sure it isn't a geranium because of the leaves, but thanks.

Dave - a corn cockle it might well be. I just googled it and am wondering whether I should I tell him now that it is poisonous or wait until his premature funeral?!
