Does anyone speak Czech, Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Romanian, Slovakian or Slovenian? I need translations for the following sentence: "Fish is food, not rubbish! Don't kill the discards ban on Monday!"
Fluff. It is in relation to the Fish Fight Campaign. There is a vote in Brussels on Monday and the statement is to encourage other EU members to support the anti-discard campaign. Fish that are not within, or exceed, your quota have to be discarded. Hence the lobbying to stop (kill) discarding fish that exceed your quota.
What do you still need? I have friends who can speak Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian Romanian and Slovak though depends when they see it and can respond on FB - some live abroad but a fair few here if they are about.
Just checking if you do still need any. Got some messages out to people (all native speakers) but thought I'd check as you haven't been back (some confusion over the meaning but can go back and explain more if so).
Disappearing for a but but will look in later in case you still need any.
If using Apple machines, the App "Free Translator" will do the job if you feed in the message in bite size chunks, eg here "fish is food", "it is not rubbish", etc.
Don't try "is not rubbish", the phrase needs a subject as well as an object.
Ok, had some confusion over what it means from people so still waiting for some replies back but got for Greek:
One of my Greek friends says this pretty much translates as "Fish are for food not rubbish. Yes in the banning of fish discards" - I'm not sure if the last bit is what you meant though so wanted to double-check, I tried to explain and showed an article. I have a feeling MarkRae might speak some Greek though if you see him about to check/amend?
One of my Romanian friends came back to me though again had a little difficulty with the context. She suggested one similar to Fluffy's though Fluffy's looks more concise :)
" Pestii sunt de mâncat, nu de aruncat. Nu opriti interzicerea aruncatului lor."
My Slovak friend was also unsure as to the meaning but sent a link to an article and still waiting on the others if they are about.
Thanks Jenna. I appreciate that it isn't the best phrasing, and without context I just know that the online translation tools will turn it into even greater gibberish!
