To help with a project I am doing,how would I find out the railway timetable,routes and costs for a rail journey from London to the Lake District circa 1940.

and bear in mind the whole thing might be different in wartime than in peace
here you'll find the LMS timetable for 1947, which will give you an idea...

from the bottom left-hand menu, select "table 50" for the London to the North Main Line.
